Useful swfObject
So, you’re putting a flash piece on your website. And of course, being the responsible, standards-compliant, unobtrusive-javascript coder that you are, you’re doing it with swfobject [link]. Swfobject is really great, since people who don’t have javascript or flash will see a div which holds good old-fashioned HTML, and generally tells the user to go an’ git it.
But there is a better use of that little div. Rather than telling a poor bloke that he should go download some software which his company’s IT department probably blocks; rather than rubbing it in his face that he’s on a dinosaur machine, or browsing the web from the public library, display something useful! Use that div for actual content! If you’re doing a simple slideshow in flash, put the actual images, with links to larger, with their titles and descriptions in there! List all your photos! This will make the content more accessible.
Whatever you’re using for flash, you might as well make a static poor-man’s version of it and just plop it in the div. At least the guy who doesn’t have flash and javascript will get something meaningful. And, as an added bonus, it’ll throw in some upgraded SEO to boot, since search engines don’t read the flash or javascript either!
